Meals on Wheels of Johnson & Ellis Counties is a community-based, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that serves needy elderly and disabled persons throughout Johnson and Ellis counties. Founded in 1977, the organization currently serves a total of 2,400 elderly and disabled persons per year in a two-county service area that covers over 1,700 square miles. The philosophy of Meals on Wheels is simple. Emphasis is placed on individuals versus numbers; communities as opposed to governmental boundaries; and timely services versus waiting lists.
More than half of our funding comes from local donors including individuals, civic groups, churches and businesses. In addition, clients and participants contribute as they can. Other revenue sources include the United Ways of Johnson County, West Ellis County, and Greater Ennis; Commissioners Courts of both Johnson and Ellis counties; Combined Federal Campaign; private foundations; and shrinking federal and state grants. Meals on Wheels contracts with the North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging, the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, the Texas Department of Agriculture, and four regional Health Maintenance Organizations to provide specific aging services in Johnson and Ellis counties. Fundraising efforts include the Annual Appeal, as well as the Annual Golf Benefit and March for Meals.
